Swipe File Logos/Roughs

Here are some logos that give me some inspiration. These design logos all caught my attention for similar reasons. I find each of them to be creatively designed by integrating a logo into their type. The use of negative space and layout between the lettering interest me. I may want to consider that in some of my designs too.

Logo Sketches

The roughs of logos done in pencil before staring on the computer to get some ideas across. Then I tested out different type faces below. This helped me get a feel for what style I was looking for.

Design Brief

1. Company Profile

The company I chose to work with is called "Arts 2 People." They are a company based in Asheville, N.C. According to the website Arts 2 People is a non-profit social service organization devoted to promoting the role of the arts as an integral part of our culture by serving the entire community through arts outreach, bringing the arts to those in need of the healing power of art, supporting the careers of artists, and through community cultural development.

MISSION STATEMENT:

  • They believe everyone should have acces to the transformational power of  creative expression. They offer classes to the general public on a sliding scale, and provide arts-in-education opportunities to underprivileged populations.
  • They see a need for local career artists, musicians and craftspeople to learn more about marketing themselves and networking with others in their field. They offer a variety of showcasing, networking, and mentoring opportunities for these professionals to increase their ability to be financially self-sufficient.
  • Lastly, They are committed to strengthening the reputation Asheville has had as a haven of the arts. They want to make the arts so firmly established here that the future growth of Asheville will not weaken their identity as an artistic community.

HISTORY

The Arts 2 People organization was founded in 2001. Originally it had been a social service organization that primarily focused on outreach to disadvantaged populations. It was founded by Alexis Gault. Today there is a whole board of people who work together in the community to spread different kinds of arts.

Some of the other Projects created within Arts 2 People are:

LAAFF (Lexington Avenue Arts & Fun Festival)
This is an event put on once a year in downtown Asheville on Lexington Ave. The festival is a day to share unique artwork, watch dance performers, listen to music, and enjoy oneself with local residents. The LAFF project has been growing now for 9 years and is the largest independent street festival in the southeast.

MOVING WOMEN
Founded in 2007, Moving Women is a dance performance ensemble that honors and invites the diverse perspectives offered by cross-game collaboration. Core members challenge themselves by working with other dancers, visual artists, musicians, poets, actors, and performance artists to create original works.

Classes with ongoing dance classes available. Intermediate levels where improvisation and creativity welcome.

AMP (Asheville Mural Project)

The Asheville Mural Project, a branch of the Arts 2 People 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, exists to beautif and diversify Asheville's urban landscape, providing artists and local community members with the opportunity to design and implement their own public art. They believe that murals enhance quality of life and create artful metropolitan experience through the transformation of conventional architecture. Their murals are both the testimony and celebration of a lively local arts culture.

 Current Website

The current website is pretty basic. The top images with the logo do not change from page to page. The logo could use some more defining characteristics to make it more recognized. The image of heart is used a lot with many groups.

2. Project Goals

Since Arts 2 People also networks with other social service and arts organizations, as well as musicians, poets, business owners, city officials, and art festivals it is essential to make themselves known to more people. Community meetings are held which bring together different cultures.

Having the opportunity to be a part of Arts 2 People is one that helps many artists network and make themselves known. My goal is to help this organization grow and let more people know about how they can get involved with Arts 2 People.

     3. Target Audience

The primary audience is everyone and anyone who has an interest in any of the arts. (visual arts, music, dance, theatre)  The audience can include other fellow artists, but being artistic is not necessary. Gender, household income level, and occupation are not relevant. The geographic location is in Asheville, NC and Western Carolina.

4. Budget and Schedule

Arts 2 People is a non-profit organization. Being a non-profit company includes having most time and work donated, which can result in working within a budget and schedule that is tight. This also means that working on designs should be convenient for Arts 2 People to access. The design needs to be easy to print and whether they are color or not should not matter.

5. Design Examples

These designs focus on playing with type in a conceptual way that relates to their organizations. The one on the top left corner is for an organization for heart disease.  The lines of motion over the word beat are layered nicely. The image of a beating heart is subtle and interesting.

The next image says the words "Forget Me Not". The concept is about tying knots to not forget. The typeface is playful and addresses the subject of Alzheimer's in an inviting way.

These images are logos for the company "babyfirst".  These logos are a lot of fun to look at. The colors are bright to bring attention.  The designers who created them were creative to make different ones for different countries.

This group of different designs are heavily image based. The text is not needed because the symbols of the images tell what the organizations are about. Using recognizable items and shapes also help bring meaning.
